WGH POETREE Thekkady

Thekkady, located near Periyar National Park in Kerala, India, is a popular tourist destination known for its lush forests and wildlife. The name "Thekkady" comes from the word "thekku," which means teak tree in Malayalam. It's about 257 km from Trivandrum, 145 km from Cochin International Airport, and 114 km from Kottayam railway station, close to the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border town of Kumily.

The area is famous for its dense forests of evergreen, semi-evergreen, and moist deciduous trees, as well as savanna grasslands. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, covering 777 square kilometers, includes 360 square kilometers of thick evergreen forest and was designated a tiger (was designated as a tiger reserve) reserve in 1978. The sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife including elephants, sambar deer, tigers (though sightings are rare), gaur, lion-tailed macaques, and Nilgiri langurs.

A highlight of Thekkady is the scenic artificial lake created by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River, where wild animals like elephants, deer, and bison often gather to drink. Visitors can explore the sanctuary through trekking, boating on the lake, or jeep safaris, offering opportunities to observe the rich biodiversity of the region.

Beyond its wildlife, Thekkady is renowned for its natural spices such as black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and clove, making it a haven for spice enthusiasts. Thekkady's blend of wildlife, scenic beauty, and spice plantations attracts nature lovers and adventure seekers alike from around the world.
